Founda Health Contributes to National MedTech Growth Plan for Future-proof Healthcare

The Dutch MedTech sector has presented a national growth plan aimed at making healthcare future-proof and structurally strengthening the Netherlands’ economic capacity. Founda Health contributes to this initiative as a partner in Flagship 1, focused on building a national network of regional command centers where data, technology, and clinical practice come together.

MedTech sector launches national growth plan: technology must support Dutch healthcare and structurally strengthen economic growth

Today, the Dutch MedTech sector is presenting an ambitious growth plan that aims to propel the Netherlands to the top of Europe by 2035. The plan, presented to State Secretary Judith Tielen (VWS) and Tjerk Opmeer (EZ), shows how technology can structurally strengthen both healthcare and the economy. With its ‘MedTech Growth Plan – Accelerate the Netherlands to the top of the medical technology sector’, the sector has contributed to the Wennink report, which was presented last week with a view to creating a future-proof and innovative Netherlands.

If the preconditions of the MedTech Growth Plan are met, the sector can have a major social and economic impact over the next ten years through:

• ~11,000 new jobs in high-quality engineering, R&D, and production
• Approximately €5 billion in additional export value per year
• ~75 new start-ups and scale-ups1
• And most importantly: a healthcare system that can meet future healthcare demands

Increase in the number and complexity of patients due to double aging

The sector emphasizes that healthcare cannot do without technological innovation if it is to continue to provide accessible and affordable care to patients. The increase in the number and complexity of patients due to double aging (of both patients and healthcare providers) requires fast, accurate diagnostics and treatment, as well as the appropriate deployment of healthcare professionals. 

MedTech offers solutions that both relieve the burden on healthcare professionals and improve patient health. Research shows that up to €22 billion in healthcare cost reductions are possible through the use of AI, digitization, and labor-saving technology. Technology is therefore a crucial link for a resilient, future-proof healthcare system and also serves as a strategic driver for the economy. 

Strategic importance for the economy and healthcare system

The Dutch MedTech sector is internationally competitive and the industry is one of the drivers of innovation within the European economy, with approximately 15,700 patents annually. Every year, the sector creates high-quality employment, export value, and technological breakthroughs that directly contribute to the quality of the healthcare system. 

The sector has a strong foundation, but acceleration is necessary. The Netherlands has a strong starting position with leading academic hospitals, universities, high-tech companies, and a mature innovation chain. However, without improvements in data access, AI and interoperability infrastructure, clinical testing capacity, and clarification of EU regulations, the Netherlands will miss out on strategic opportunities. 

In addition, further development of the innovation ecosystem is needed, from talent development to venture financing and from harmonized data governance to increasing production capacity. These preconditions will determine whether the Netherlands can grow or lose ground to fast-growing MedTech hubs in Europe, the United States, and Asia.

De Nederlandse MedTech-sector heeft een nationaal groeiplan gepresenteerd dat tot doel heeft de gezondheidszorg toekomstbestendig te maken en de economische capaciteit van Nederland structureel te versterken. Founda Health draagt bij aan dit initiatief als partner in Flagship 1, dat zich richt op het opzetten van een nationaal netwerk van regionale commandocentra waar data, technologie en klinische praktijk samenkomen.

MedTech-sector lanceert nationaal groeiplan: technologie moet Nederlandse gezondheidszorg ondersteunen en economische groei structureel versterken

De Nederlandse MedTech-sector presenteert vandaag een ambitieus groeiplan dat Nederland in 2035 naar de Europese top moet brengen. Het plan, aangeboden aan staatssecretaris Judith Tielen (VWS) en Tjerk Opmeer (EZ), laat zien hoe technologie de zorg én economie structureel kan versterken. Met ‘Groeiplan MedTech – Versnel Nederland naar de top in de medische technologiesector’ heeft de sector bijgedragen aan het rapport-Wennink, dat vorige week werd gepresenteerd voor een toekomstbestendig en innovatief Nederland.

Als aan de randvoorwaarden van het Groeiplan MedTech wordt voldaan kan de sector grote maatschappelijke en economische impact maken in de komende tien jaar door:

• ~11.000 nieuwe banen in hoogwaardige techniek, R&D en productie
• Circa €5 miljard extra exportwaarde per jaar¹
• ~75 nieuwe start-ups en scale-ups¹
• En het belangrijkste: een zorgstelsel dat de toekomstige zorgvraag kan opvangen

Toename aantal en complexe patiënten door dubbele vergrijzing

De sector benadrukt dat de gezondheidszorg niet zonder technologische innovatie kan om toegankelijke en betaalbare zorg te blijven leveren aan patiënten. De toename van het aantal en complexe patiënten door de dubbele vergrijzing (van zowel patiënten als zorgverleners) vraagt om snelle, nauwkeurige diagnostiek en behandeling, evenals de juiste inzet van zorgprofessionals. 

MedTech biedt oplossingen die zowel de zorgprofessional ontlasten als gezondheidswinst realiseren voor patiënten. Onderzoek laat zien dat tot €22 miljard zorgkostenreductie door inzet van AI, digitalisering en arbeidsbesparende technologie mogelijk is. Technologie is daarmee een cruciale schakel voor een weerbaar, toekomstbestending zorgstelsel én dient daarnaast als een strategische motor voor de economie. 

Strategische betekenis voor economie en zorgstelsel

De Nederlandse MedTech-sector is internationaal concurrerend en de industrie is een van de aanjagers van innovatie binnen de Europese economie met jaarlijks ongeveer 15.700 patenten. Jaarlijks creëert de sector hoogwaardige werkgelegenheid, exportwaarde en technologische doorbraken die direct bijdragen aan de kwaliteit van het zorgstelsel. 

De basis van de sector is sterk, maar versnelling is noodzakelijk. Nederland heeft een mooie uitgangspositie met sterke academische ziekenhuizen, toonaangevende universiteiten, hightechbedrijven en een volwassen innovatieketen. Zonder verbeteringen in datatoegang, AI- en interoperabiliteitsinfrastructuur, klinische testcapaciteit en verduidelijking van EU-regelgeving loopt Nederland echter strategische kansen mis. 

Daarnaast is nog verdere ontwikkeling van het innovatie-ecosysteem nodig van talentontwikkeling tot venture-financiering en van geharmoniseerde data-governance tot vergroten van productiecapaciteit. Deze randvoorwaarden bepalen of Nederland kan groeien of terrein verliest aan snelgroeiende MedTech-hubs in Europa, de Verenigde Staten en Azië.
