OLVG Hospital Unlocks Interoperable Imaging with Founda Platform

October 21, 2025

OLVG Hospital has successfully completed the migration from its Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) to AGFA PACS, using the Founda Platform to power a more connected, accurate, and efficient exchange of imaging data in the Dutch XDS Network.

This milestone marks another step forward in making healthcare data flow seamlessly between systems, where it can truly support better care.

From migration to transformation

Behind every successful system upgrade lies the opportunity to rethink how data moves through care. With this implementation, OLVG has introduced a new workflow that connects imaging studies directly to Founda’s interoperability layer, ensuring that every scan and record remains accurate, available, and linked to the right patient.

The process automatically triggers HL7 IAN (Image Availability Notification) messages through ORU events, performs C-FIND queries to AGFA PACS to update Key Object Selection (KOS) documents, and uses FHIR queries via Founda to validate StudyInstanceUIDs.

A smoother experience for clinicians and patients

For clinicians, the new setup means imaging data is easier to find, faster to load, and more consistent across systems. For patients, it translates into fewer delays, reduced errors, and better-informed care.

By leveraging the Founda platform as the backbone for data exchange, OLVG ensures that imaging studies are not only stored but also discoverable and interoperable across the hospital’s digital environment.

"Partnering with Founda has been instrumental in ensuring a smooth migration from our legacy VNA to AGFA PACS. Their interoperability expertise allowed us to seamlessly integrate IHE workflows, automate XDS submissions, and maintain full traceability of imaging data throughout the process. This new architecture ensures the continuity of our data consistency, patient accuracy, and overall system reliability. "

Interoperability in action

This project shows how open standards can deliver measurable impact in everyday clinical practice. What once required manual coordination or repeated imaging requests now happens automatically, securely, and in real time.

At Founda, we work with hospitals and technology partners to make interoperability not just a goal but a foundation. The OLVG implementation highlights what’s possible when open standards, strong partnerships, and real-world workflows come together to make healthcare data work for everyone.
